Do you realize that there have been lots of people fall sick lately, either adult or child? The weather changes drastically, from rain to dry, from cool to extremely hot and dry over here (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). Many people have caught in the cold season - cough, flu and fever. The immune system of a child is not as strong as adult, therefore children are easily attacked by cold. What steps shall we take to prevent our child from getting the seasonal cold? Prevention is better than cure, it’s the best way to nurture our child’s health!
The most important job for adults is to strengthen our child’s immune system. If his immune system is strong, the body is able to fight against cold bacteria that trying to invade the body:
- Ensure our child has sufficient night sleep every night, e.g. 8 to 10 hours sleep depending on the child’s age group. Practice a regular sleep routine at home.
- Train our child to eat fresh fruits and vegetables (e.g. oranges, apples, cherries, broccoli, carrots, spinach etc.) as they provide lots of vitamin C that can improve our body resistance towards illnesses. Some children just hate to eat fruits, but we have to keep trying. Cultivate a good eating habit among the children. Stay away from processed food and junk food. Replace these food with fresh food in our child’s daily menu.
- Wash hands regularly, especially before and after meal. Teach our child the right way to wash his hands - rinse hands in the running tap water, apply soap/hand wash, rub and scrub hands and fingers, finally rinse off the soap and dirt under the running water. We need to monitor if our child wash his hands in the beginning until he develops the hand wash habit.  We have incidents where children didn’t wash their hands after they have gone to toilet! Yakky!
- Avoid public areas such as swimming pool, shopping malls that are crowded with people. Take the children out to the park. Let them enjoy the nature and exercise their muscles by running, hopping, jumping etc.. Healthy sweating helps eliminate toxins from our body! Exercising also encourage better blood circulation that transfer oxygen and minerals that are useful to our body cells. Our body cells become stronger!
Healthy lifestyle keeps us and our child away from sicknesses! Begin the prevention guidelines from this moment onwards and we shall be able to cultivate a healthy living habit in our child!
