It’s time to do another fun activity with our child to nurture their creativity as well as occupy their time during the free time at home or in school!

Materials

  • Water color or poster color - green, yelow, orange
  • Painting paper
  • green color paper
  • brown color paper
  • scissors
  • glue

Steps

  1. Pre-cut some grass shapes using green color paper.  For older children who are able to handle scissors, let them cut the shape personally.  You just need to draw the zig-zag and straight line for them to cut along.
  2. Pre-cut a tree trunk using brown paper. Again, you can also draw the tree trunk shape on the brown paper and ask the older children to cut along the line.  This can help the child to reinforce his hand-eye coordination and handling of scissors (fine motor skills).
  3. Paste the tree trunk on the painting paper with glue.   Followed by the green grass.  Show the child how to spread the glue over the tree trunk.
  4. Show the child to make leaves on top of the tree using fingers printing.  Dot the colors all over the top of the tree.  Children enjoyed this part very much.
  5. Hang the paper to dry the paint.
  6. Allow the child to create his own imaginative tree!  Let him freely play with the colors on the paper.

Additional Lessons

  • Go for a nature walk in the park or the garden before the activity.
  • Talk about trees.  Show the child parts of trees - root, trunk, branches, leaves, fruits.
  • Talk about important of trees to the environment - produce oxygen, give shades, conserve water, improve air quality, provide food etc.  Cultivate ecological and environmental value among the children.
  • Teach younger children to about colors.  Get the child to name colors to reinforce his memory about colors.
  • Plan a tree in the garden.  Let the child perform and feel each process of planting a tree.  Water and care for the tree every day.

The activity is not just about craft or creativity.  We can extend it to a wider lesson to cultivate empathy and care towards trees in his surrounding.  We should cultivate the value of preserving the green environment in every child since young age.  Enjoy the activity!
