Yes, I’m introducing another easy to get tools to nurture our child’s development - Jugs! You can get two transparent jugs from any supermarket. Remember child size! This is to enable your child to hold properly and comfortably. We call this activity involving two jugs as POURING from jug to jug! The benefits of this pouring activity are to nurture our child’s :

  • Physical development inclusive of hand-eye coordination and gross motor control. The child needs to position his jug properly by coordinating his sight with his hand movement so that there’s no spillage of objects from the jug.
  • intelligent development as the child thinks and finds way to improve his pouring skills in order to avoid spillage from the jug.
  • Language development by introducing new vocabularies and grammars. This can be achieve by talking and interacting your child.
  • Emotional development as the child develops confident when he is able to perform the activity on his own. At the same time, he is developing concentration which is important in his future learning.
  • Social development by developing the child’s social skills. It can be achieved when the child is working on the activity with another child. He will learn to communicate with other child and also sharing of materials.

Prepared the following materials for the pouring activity :

  1. Two child size jugs
  2. Object in one jug can be pasta/rice/water/shells/buttons etc. The object depends on the age of the child. Pasta is recommended for children less than 3 years old as it is not that messy as compare with rice. Please make sure the water used is poured way after finished working with the activity. You may add in colour in the water using food colouring to make the material more interesting and attractive to the child.
  3. A tray, to enable spillage on the jug

Please remember each child is special. Each child has different stages of development. Child A of 3 years old may develop better hand-eye coordination compares to Child B who is also 3 years old. This is due to different experience and exposure that the children receive in their growing up period. So, you can trial and error to find the suitable object for your child. Change your object accordingly to the child’s progress so he is able to refine his existing skills.

Children love pouring. Put the materials at your child’s play corner, so that he can work with it anytime he wants. Pouring activity will be a new play for your child at home. Therefore, you can save more cost as the materials are cheap and easy to get. For nursery or kndergarten owner, this activity can be implemented in your environment as well. Lets nurture our child with this simple tool!
