Lots of parents are having hard time to occupy their child’s time at home . It is part of the many challenges that we face in the journey of nurturing our child. We need to have new activities to attract our child to pay attention on them in order to work with the activities. When our child is able to do that, he is developing his concentration as well as his intellectual.
I came across this lovely weblog “The Daily” by Hannie. She is a mother of two boys of 5 and 3 years old. She loves scrapbooking and shares a lot of her creative and lovely cards and frames on her weblog. All her cards and frames have their own stories. When we look at the crafts that she made, we are not just looking at the pictures/photos, but we are reading a short story of each happening. When the children have grown up, they are able to retrieve their memory on their past occasions just by going through the cards, frames. and scrapbooks. How lovely! I am honored that Hannie is able to share with us a simple card making session that she has done with her children recently.
First of all, let me tell you how fun it can be to make crafts with the children. Believe me, both adult and children enjoy making crafts together. Before we begin the craft session, we need to make some preparation. We need to find a space at home and then get ready some tools, materials. We also must prepare a right mentality within ourselves. Most of the time, I tell myself that it doesn’t matter how the craft look like end of the session, it is the process of making that I emphasize the most. I like my children to enjoy themselves throughout the session and making the cards they want. They may have their craft to be done in their own way. They choose their colors and style. The card making is entirely up to them because that will be their work and not mine. To me and my children, spending time together is more precious than having a clean table or just nice looking cards.
I personally find that the simplest and easiest craft with kids is to make cards or tags. Get the materials and tools ready!
- Glue
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Eyelet setter
- Stamping pad
- Pen/pencil
- Corner rounder
- Pre-cut cards,
- Pattern papers
- Accessories such as brads, flowers, eyelets, chipboard and maybe stamps. Children love stamps!

The card can be in any size you prefer. The size that I normally choose for my card is 4” x 6”. As this is a fun card making session, I’m not using archival paper for the craft except those left over from my scrapbooking. Remember not to throw away small scraps that not used if you are doing scrapbook. Keep them in a recycle box; they might become handy and useful one day. The children can stick collages out from the scraps or cut into small pattern; or just simply mix and match the craps on their cards.
Once you’ve got everything ready, put them on a large table. You may use your kitchen table if you don’t have a craft table at home. You may even just work with the activity on the floor! Inform the children about the fun card making activity! For my 3 years old son, I will let him decorate his card with hand prints and this can be messy but fun! Also, be alert when the child is using a scissors. Safety is very important!
Cut the pattern paper into simple shapes. Stick them on their cards. Secure flowers using brads on the card. Allow your child to stamp patterns with stamp pad and some coloring on the card. Remind your child to place their embellishment within the card itself. Finally, let your child decide who to give to once the card is done. I let my children stamp inside of the card with “Thank you” words and then get my 5 years old to write to whom that he want to give the card to.
Have fun,
Hannie
I hope you are able to spend time with your little ones to make a lovely card. Maybe you can consider making a scrapbook for your little one as well!
