Story telling is a good way to nurture our child’s language development. Children love stories. Before we want our child to learn how to read and write, we need to nurture his interest in books first. When he begins to like books, he will eventually has a will to learn reading because he has an urge to find out the story line in a book. As I shared with you in my previous article, I initially nurtured the boys interest in story books before I asked them if they want to learn to read on their own. When they found that reading is so fun and the stories are so interesting, they told me that they want to learn to read on their own will. From then onwards, I started to guide them in blending letters into words, word building and so on. As this is their own will of learning, I cut down my headache of pushing them to memorizing words. Furthermore, they improved so much in their English language because they are learning on their own will. Therefore, do start nurture our child’s good reading habit.
I read this inspired story of a dog in a newspaper the other day. I like to share this story with the parents and care givers/teachers so that you can then tell this story to your child. I believe most children love dogs. The story of this particular dog not just help nurture our child’s language development, but also nurture our child’s emotional development. That is nurturing the compassion towards the weak and also nurturing the faith in the child that every obstacles in life can be overcome. We are cultivating good values such as helping the weak, love and care towards animals and so on into our child’s mind.
Faith is a dog that born with deformities. At the time he was rescued, he was almost killed by his mother. He was weak, small and nearly dead. He was sent for an operation to remove his badly deformed left front leg when he was just 7 months old. Ever since then, he has only 2 back legs. His new owner didn’t give up on him. Instead, he was trained to stand, hop and walk on his two back legs. Faith has gone through a very tough process that you can hardly imagine before he can walk on his own two legs again. This is because the love of his owner has given him strength to live on. The believe from his owner that one day Faith will be able to move on his own has given him the faith that he can do it! Faith did it! He is now a superstar that inspired so many people in the world that how amazing that a dog with deformities can achieve so much! Today, Faith is able to stand, hop, walk, jump, run, skip and do other stunts like normal dogs do, with just his two back legs!
While telling this story to your child, please watch out your tone. Tell it in an excited tone so that your child will look forward to listen to you. Make the story telling more interesting by adding facial expression, body movements or even making funny sound such as barks, ouch and so on. Change your tone of voice along the story line. For instance, pretend to be sad by making sad face and weeping sound when you talk about Faith being dumped by its mother; happy face and laughter when you tell the part where Faith can walk again. Be funny, your child will love you even more. At the end of the story, let the child know what he has learnt from the story. Summarize it! Don’t worry, they will absorb what you tell them. Keep telling the good moral stories, your child will eventually benefits from your effort.
