As a parent, we want the best for our child in order to nurture our child into a responsible and caring person. We do everything we can to provide shelter, food, education and love for our child. Although we do provide the daily necessity for our child, but do we ever examine the quality of each necessity that we have been provided all this while? If you send your child to nursery or kindergarten, do you observe the environment that the center offers to our child? These centers provide an environment to help our child to learn and develop physically and intellectually in the positive way. What about our home? Does it have a setting and positive environment that stimulate our child’s learning ability and interest?
Our child spend most of his time at home after school. Therefore, the setting at home must be able to help the child to continue learning and developing. We need to keep a routine at home as well because a child will be able to adapt and progress in a structured environment. Therefore, we must keep an order in our home setting and environment. Draw a list of ground rules at home so that the child learns about limitation (do’s and dont’s) and develops self-discipline.
A child learns from his environment. He observes the adult’s behavior and imitate the behavior. Therefore, we need to practice good behavior and good habits at all time to be a good role model for our child. That’s part of important role that we need to play at home. By doing so, we eventually improve ourselves too!
What about setting at home? Most of the time, adult expect a child to learn and does activities that are beneficial to his development. However, we do not prepare a space for our child at home. There is little opportunity for the child to fulfill himself due to our insensitivity towards our child’s real needs. His attention is occupied by toys and useless occupation that eventually defect from his true path - striving for independence, self-confidence and self-discipline.
We need to provide our child a work station of his own :
-
a child size table and stool/chair
-
some coloring materials (crayons, color pencils)
-
writing materials (pencils, eraser, ruler, sharpener)
-
painting papers
-
writing papers
-
coloring book
-
story books
